The Step That Reached the Edge
🧡 Bronto’s Journal: The Circle I Didn’t Step Into
Part 2: The Step That Reached the Edge
The circle wasn’t wild, but it moved - a little like a wheel, a little like a wave. The kids inside it passed a ball, then a word, then a laugh. Hands tightened and loosened as the rhythm picked up. Max bounced from foot to foot, narrating every move like the game wouldn’t work unless his voice kept it going. Lila called out the next rule. Someone dropped the ball and everyone cheered anyway.
Quzii took one step forward.
It wasn’t a dramatic step. It didn’t crunch bark chips or turn heads. But it was real. His foot shifted. Then the other. He moved again - not all the way in, not even halfway, just enough that the edge of the group touched the edge of his shadow.
Max noticed. He opened a gap, not with words, just a slight tug of his arm. Enough for one more. Someone else said, “Come on!” Not mean. Not impatient. Just loud enough to be heard over the game.
Quzii didn’t speak. He didn’t nod. He stood at the edge. Close enough to see the hands move, close enough to hear the rules again. He could smell someone’s lunch on their breath. He could feel the beat of the rhythm through the bark.
But he didn’t step in.
Not because he couldn’t. Not because he didn’t want to. Because something inside wasn’t quite ready - not for the game, but for the shape of it. The eyes, the laughter, the hands that might squeeze too long or not enough.
At the far corner of the sandbox, Bronto sat. Not center. Not hidden. Still. His stitched back leaned against the wooden edge. His face wasn’t aimed at Quzii. But his eyes - those soft black buttons - were angled just slightly toward the space where the circle had broken open.
And stayed open.
The moment stretched. Then passed. The game rolled on. Max shouted something else. Lila skipped a beat. And Quzii took one step back. Not a retreat. Just a return.
Some days, almost is enough.
Sometimes, the step that doesn’t land
still means you moved.
Sometimes, almost joining is the bravest thing you do all day.
