The Spot Bronto Saved

🧡 Bronto’s Journal: The Circle I Didn’t Step Into

Part 3: The Spot Bronto Saved

The game ended the way most of them do - with someone running too far, someone laughing too hard, and someone else calling out, “Last round!” when the circle was already falling apart. Hands dropped. The ball rolled. The group thinned into clusters heading toward the cafeteria line. No one said who won. No one needed to.

Quzii hadn’t moved from his place near the sandbox. He hadn’t joined. He hadn’t cheered. But he’d watched. Not just the game - the rhythm of it, the timing, the pauses between claps, the way Max leaned in when he passed the ball to Lila. Quzii knew those things now, even if he hadn’t touched the circle once.

By the time they got to lunch, the cafeteria hum had settled into a pattern: trays, scoots, soft thumps of cartons landing too hard. Quzii didn’t sit where he usually sat. He picked the bench near the window - the one most kids passed by because it had a slant and a scratch in the middle. But today, it had something else: Bronto.

Quzii placed him there first. Carefully. Not dropped. Not slumped. He set Bronto upright, leaning just enough that his stitched spine met the bench without falling back. Then, only after Bronto was settled, Quzii sat beside him. He opened his lunch slowly, peeled back the edge of the grape container, picked one out, and placed it beside Bronto.

Not in his lap. Not like a joke. Just beside him.

There were voices around them. The table next over was trading crackers. Someone was singing the end of a jingle from morning announcements. But Quzii didn’t speak. He didn’t mention the circle. Didn’t say he’d been watching. Didn’t say why Bronto had come to lunch instead of staying in the cubby.

He didn’t need to.

Because sometimes the bench isn’t a leftover spot.
Sometimes it’s the place you choose when you’re building your own shape.
And Bronto had been there first.

You don’t have to stand in the middle to be part of something.
