The Paper That Stayed in My Paw

🧡 Bronto’s Journal: The Week the Drawer Stayed Closed

Part 3: The Paper That Stayed in My Paw

The classroom wasn’t quiet anymore. Dismissal had its own kind of noise - backpacks unzipping like zipper storms, chairs scooting in uneven rhythms, voices bouncing from wall to wall without waiting for permission. Max knocked over a bin of pencils with his tail and didn’t stop moving long enough to pick them up. Zara had three drawings in one paw and was trying to fold them all at once while her lunchbox swung from the other.

And in the middle of all of it, Quzii stood still.

His paw was still wrapped around the same folded page he’d carried since midday - the one with the swirls. The paper had softened slightly at the edges now, warm from being held too long. It didn’t flap. Didn’t bend. It stayed folded the way he had made it, three creases straight, edges aligned like it was waiting for something but didn’t mind if it took a while.

The drawer was still there. Same place. Same shape. No new marks. No new light. Just open enough from earlier in the day to remind him it existed. But Quzii didn’t glance at it. Didn’t drift toward it. He looked only at his backpack - sitting next to his chair, top pocket open, small side pocket slightly loose.

He crouched, shifted the folded paper to his other paw, and with a kind of quiet that didn’t need silence, he slipped the page into the side pocket. Not crammed. Not rolled. Not hidden. Just… placed. Like the paper knew the drawer wasn’t the destination anymore.

Bronto sat balanced on the top of the cubby shelf now. His stitched legs dangled, but his button eyes were angled outward - toward the door, the hallway, the exit path. He wasn’t waiting for anything. But he was ready to go.

Some things don’t get sorted.
Some things don’t get traded, taped up, or tucked into slots.
Some things just stay in your paw
until they’re ready to go with you.

Not everything gets filed.
Some things come with you.
