The Night Quzii Almost Spoke

🧡 Bronto’s Journal: The Word That Waited

Part 1: The Night Quzii Almost Spoke

The hallway light stretched only so far. It reached the edge of Quzii’s bed but not the middle of the room, and that made everything in between feel like a secret. Shadows curled around the legs of the dresser. The soft hum of Luna’s closing footsteps faded like the end of a lullaby. And Bronto-well, Bronto stayed exactly where he’d been placed, at the fold of the blanket, facing the door. Not guarding. Just… being there.

Quzii didn’t toss. He didn’t turn. He stayed on his side, one paw beneath his cheek, the other just barely resting on the edge of Bronto’s tail. His breath had a hitch in it tonight. Not the kind that meant he was going to cry-just the kind that meant something was inside him, and it wanted out.

The word had arrived sometime during teeth brushing. Maybe it had been waiting before that, hiding in his sock when he got home from school, or curled inside his math folder. It wasn’t a loud word. Not the kind you shout at recess or call across the lunch line. This word was smaller than that. Slower. Older. It climbed up his throat gently, like a rope he didn’t remember tying.

He opened his mouth.

Bronto didn’t move. But his ears perked slightly-the stitched ones, sewn with soft blue thread. He wasn’t expecting anything. He never did. But he always noticed when something leaned close to happening.

Quzii’s mouth stayed open for a breath.

And then… nothing.

Not the quiet kind of nothing. Not the bedtime-nothing where you’re too tired to care. This was an alert nothing. A waiting nothing. The kind of nothing that knows it could’ve become something but didn’t.

Quzii swallowed.

Bronto didn’t blink. He didn’t need to. But if you’d been watching closely-and I mean really closely-you might have noticed a slight tilt of his head. Just enough to show he was listening, even if nothing had been said.

Outside the room, the hallway light flickered once. Just a soft pulse, like it was unsure whether to stay on or let the darkness have its way. But it stayed. And in that narrow glow, Bronto’s body cast a gentle curve across the blanket. A line between safety and silence.

Quzii closed his mouth. Rolled onto his back. His paw stayed close to Bronto, not holding him, not clutching, just there.

And that word?
It stayed where it was. Not forgotten. Not lost. Just… waiting.

Bronto didn’t move closer. He didn’t need to. He already was close.

Some stories don’t begin with a bang or a roar.
Some begin with a breath held just a little too long.

And some?
Begin before the first word is spoken.
